Hospitality is ‘Not a Career Option’

Half of Facebook Youngsters Say Hospitality is ‘Not a Career Option’

Youth unemployment may be at crisis levels, but if there’s one place young people really do not want to work it is the hospitality industry.
It is not so much that they can’t stand the heat in the kitchen, rather they can’t stand the idea of being in the kitchen at all, and would rather be in a job where they can use their ‘social media skills’.
Decades of celebrity restaurateurs such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay appearing on television, a mountain of lavishly produced recipe books and excited claims that ‘cooking is the new rock ’n’ roll’ have apparently failed to impress the younger generation.
A survey by web-based restaurant reservation and marketing service livebookings.co.uk questioned 1,000 people between the ages of 16 and 24. The results may help explain why so many bar and waiting staff seem to come from eastern Europe and further afield.
Nearly half – 43 per cent – said they ‘would not consider hospitality as a career option’.
The lack of interest in a hospitality career is an unfortunate mismatch with the jobs market, with hotels and restaurants being one of the few sectors recruiting. It has seen a seven per cent rise in the number of jobs over the past two years, compared with a rise in the wider economy of 1.7 per cent.
Two in five young people said they felt working in hospitality would be ‘boring and repetitive’ while nearly 29 per cent said the industry ‘was not forward-looking enough’.
A further reason may be in the use of computer technology by young people. The survey showed that one in five felt a job in hospitality ‘would not use their technology skills and their knowledge of the internet and social media’.
A third felt their skills ‘would be better suited to an office environment’.
Young workers in the North were more positive, with six out of ten saying they would consider a hospitality job, against five out of ten southerners.
